Hyoho Niten Ichiryu Kenjutsu
The sword school founded by the famous swordsman, Miyamoto Musashi. Musashi's real name was Shinmen Musashi no Kami Fujiwara no Genshin. He was also known as Shinmen Takezo. Born in the Harima Province. His books are well read, especially "The Book of Five Rings" or Go Rin No Sho. The Book of Five Rings is a staple for any budo enthusiast. It contains a bit of his biography, but mostly it is about his school's techniques, essays about the mind, his philosophy about weapons.
Although fighting with two swords was quite common before he was born (1584), it was Musashi who took the art of dueling with two swords to a higher level with his philosophy. The idea of using two hands for a sword is an idea which Musashi disagrees with, in that there is not fluidity in movement when using two hands — "If you hold a sword with both hands, it is difficult to wield it freely to left and right, so my method is to carry the sword in one hand". Further advantages of two-swords handling is given in the Book of Five Rings.
Niten Ichiryu can be loosely translated as "the school of the strategy of two heavens as one". Their techniques are:
1. Tachi Seiho—Twelve techniques with long sword.
2. Nito Seiho—Five techniques with two swords corresponding to the five forms in the Water Scroll.
3. Kodachi Seiho—Seven techniques with a short sword.
4. Bōjutsu—Twenty techniques with a staff.
5. Aikuchi roppo
6. Jitte to jutsu—Five techniques against a sword
Iwami Toshio Gensho is the sole legal representative of Hyōhō Niten Ichi-ryū.
