Oh! you mean "high-raised" sorry for my miss understanding. As my personal opinion, "the higher you raise, the slower you will be". I have also got this bad habit, still trying to take it off me.
Sometime because of I raise too high, it hurt my leg.
But it is not against the rules.

Yeah, david88; i''m kinda curious where you are training? cos i've not seen your face before at YMCA.
Back to the question I had earlier, billy. I'm referring to the "hopping" leap when striking. I've seen it from the video you posted as well as from some other tournament videos. It seems pretty normal to have that "high-raised" right foot when striking but my sempai warned me not to follow as it is not encouraged by our senseis.
So, my questions are:
1) Is it against the rules to do this act ("high-raised" right foot)?
2) Any particular reasons why it is not encouraged in our dojo? Since you were from Penang dojo before, so thought that you might have a clue. Or it simply a hearsay thingy?

I found out there's a class in YMCA. Mine isn't. I'll meet our real sensei's only in Feb.
Now we have a senior teaching us.
I dunno if we're related.
I'm just a newbie, after all...

sorry i am not quite understand your question, but what the video show is that how to "seme". mean one step forward before attack, it can become an invitation for your opponent, if your opponent not attacking you, you also near enough to make a good cut.
Re: The study of the foot to attack Kendo.100106
My sensei makes us do it.
It's not a hop. you sort of just lift your front leg to launch yourself forward.
Almost like badminton

hi billy,
i've watched this video and i presumed that it is ok to "raise" one's leg to leap in shiai?
my question is, heard that our sensei do not encourage this "hopping" footwork. any possible reasons? or this can be done by higher grades kendokas only?
