From my own 2 rupees... and not necessarily correct X_x
Kiai-ing from your diaphragm (or in a simpler explanation, your stomach). To me, the muscles used (when I kiai) is very much similar to when a person coughs. If one can actually feel the abdominal muscles there contract, mimick that and incorporate it to one's kiai. Perhaps... it may help you if you don't know how to kiai without using your throat? Maybe making it louder at the same time? ^^

Ki (spirit) - Kiai
This is a rather informal post with no references to any website. It's just my own understanding.
Ki is simply said as spirit. Internal it is your mental state and external portrayal by your kiai and alertness.
Personally I have difficulties with kiai. It's very soft most of the time according to fellow kendokas I practice with.
So here are two things I found out how kiai should sound or rather feel like:
1) Try riding on the solero shot in Genting Highlands. (The one where you drop from 10ft I believe) However, there is a sense of thrill and fear involved. Point to note is the strenght you use to scream. The natural feeling of it.
2) Singing Linkin' Park and having your karaoke mates telling you that they STILL CAN'T HEAR YOU.
However, if you're getting sorethroats after these exercises, you're doing it wrong. Your throat should not hurt as you should use your diaphragm. Take up a trial vocal class if you need to. Hahaha Enjoy~
