Manage to get 10++ haya-suburi but I don't think I do it correctly... Even my kiai & breathing still not good enough...

Kid, just try for 30 haya-suburi. You have a month to prepare. I assume you're going for 10th kyu? Please practice ashi-sabaki (ya toh hidari migi), men suburi, haya suburi, and men cut.

Try for 30 haya-suburi everyday. If you can't do 10 first, then everyday, add 1.

If you keep doing the same thing over and over again in 7 weeks, it will be your habit. Good or bad.

I tried to kiai from my abdomen. Not too sure if it came out right though. Today's kiai is a different one also Which makes me think that I am picking up different kiai types from the people around me... ^^||

Speaking of gradings, don't expect it to finish before 6pm =P Usually we are supposed to gather by 1pm. Once you are done, it's either hang around or watch the seniors grade ^.^

Kiai refers to vocalisation of the concentration on one's opponent.
The kiai 'shout' must come from the belly.
Kiai is not mere yelling or screaming from the throat only.

Speaking of grading... what do senseis look for during tachiai?

Yes, it is. Soft kiai is an indication of low confidence - something you have to work at.

Senseis look for strong kiai, good footwork, ki-ken-tai ichi, good form. You have to be able to demonstrate that you can make a clear cut. If you screw up your cut, don't stop - you must complete the cut by running through.

Please remember that taichiai is jigeiko at near-kakari-geiko speed. So stamina is of an issue especially since you have to fight 2 people in a very short space of time. Suggest more kakari-geiko/uchikomi work for you.

Welcome Welcome! ^_^

Zanshin~! Most definitely. Need to work on my own one as well. At the same time, I need to settle on my kiai haha. It's been changing every training session and I have no idea why.

Though, I'd repeat what people have told me: remember the other little things like how you stand, how you draw your shinai (I remember that my whole batch got a nice lecture for not going into 'taito' before drawing ^^'), how you bow, etc etc and so on and so forth. Last but not least! KIAI!!! As loud as you can as if you trying to make everyone go deaf. XD

Totally agree on 'kiai' part but dont get a sore throat out of it. Remember zanshin too.
