Its pretty standard - Left hand is all the power where the right is just controlling left or right. Pretty tough for anyone whos right handed =(

yayaya. That's him.

Telling us to bow and "sensei!", don't hi-hi lalala. lol
Seems got another sensei following to visit. Didn't get the name..

Seriously serious training about to begin... ><

I'm just learning Kendo and chanbara. East sports academy. He's getting the place matted before he can teach Iaido.

Yup Smile
I joined cuz it's the only one I knew. After that found out YMCA also got.

He doesn't claim to be sensei tho. When we bow it's just 'otagani'. I'll meet our Japanese sensei only come Feb.

Thanks, aoshi, avictar, everyone for the advice!

My sensei can teach Iaido. Also Jodo and Chanbara. ^^

Maybe that's why he emphasizes left hand so much...
"to achieve the speed" also, he says.

I practice Iai (as in Iaido / Iaijutsu) using an Iaito/blunt sword. A sword with good balance will do most of the cutting job. My sensei always guided me to cut esp doing shomen by imagining as if you're flicking a fishing pole with the left hand, single handedly. The right hand is to guide and stop the sword. A sufficient amount of energy/force from the arm is necessary but not entirely... Utilize the gravity to advantage, this what makes the cutting flow very fluid. There's no simple explanation on how to get a perfect cut.. I've always been told, "Practice..practice..practice..." You'll know when you get it right. If you practice with an iaito, listen to the wind sound produced from groove i.e bo-hi as indication whether or not it is a good cut. Hope that helps.

I would use 70:30 power ratio in training but 50:50 in shiai... But sometimes in training i still rely on my left more coz can't help but to exert the power using my left. I'm jealous at those left hand-ers with much stronger left hand lol

yeah. mine too.
he said left does everything, right just helps it.
Even in stopping, your left still plays much of the role.

my senpai said 100% left hand. Right hand is only for stopping the shinai. That is why he always asks us to frequently do katate-suburi

my apols but the right is strictly for positioning of the shenai whilst the left is for power i.e. 30:70 power ratio...is this correct?
