kendo tidbits corner (19-9-2009)
一応(いちおう)これは剣道の豆知識(まめちしき)コーナの初(はつ)ポストなので、アドバイスがあれば、大変(たいへん)役に立つ(やくにたつ)ので、どんどん言って下さい(いってくだいさい)。
[Since this is my first post on the subject,if there is any advice, I'm pretty much open to it.]
This corner are for people who are interested in what their Sensei are talking in Japanese while teaching kendo. So I will proceed by how I do things right here.
In written Japanese there are 漢字 {kanji: chinese character origin} , カタカナ{katakana: japanese character simplified from kanji to denote foreign word} and ひらがな{hiragana: japanese character simplified from kanji to denote native words}.
Since kanji have different reading depending on context, and I guess the hard part of learning Japanese is learning how to read kanji, so every kanji character i used will have (...)to denote the reading of the character in hiragana or romaji but I'll most likely would write hiragana.
And the translation of the words are written in [...] so it easier for you guys to know, which is which. and finally all my explanation will be written using : or {}. Since, I'm also not free from error, it would be a great help if you could point it for me.
では、構え(かまえ)をする時(とき)の単語(たんご)で始めましょう(はじめましょ)
[We start with the words that you might come across when kamae.]
1.頭(あたま)、肩(かた)、剣先(けんさき)、正中線(せいちゅうせん)、腰(こし)、ひざ、ひじ、右手(みぎて)、左手(ひだりて)、右足(みぎあし)、左足(ひだりあし)、背筋(せすじ) [head, shoulder,tip of the shinai, centre line, waist or lower back, knee, elbow, right hand, left hand, right leg, left leg,and the back]
2.肩(かた)に力(ちから)を入れない [Don't put strength into the shoulder] @ 肩をリラクス [relax your shoulder]
{This usually refer to a person that tense their shoulder too much, in kendo the shoulder should be relax to ease the movement of the shinai when you move another. And by changing the word 肩 to 右手 then it means your right hand is too tense}
3.姿勢(しせい)が崩した(くずした) [broken posture] {refer to a kamae that is open to attack or a condition where it is hard to defend due to improper posture}
4.足幅(あしはば)が狭すぎる(せますぎる) [width of between both legs are too small] @ 足幅が広すぎる(ひろすぎる) [width between two legs are too wide] {refers to width between both leg which effects stability and mobility, too small means unbalance and too big means to stable and less mobility}
5.左足(ひだりあし)が高すぎる(たかすぎる) [the height of the left leg too high] {refers to the condition of the left leg, usually a person whose left leg is high have less attacking distance due to more body weight on the front leg.}
6.遠山(えんざん)の目付け(めつけ) [looking at the far mountain] {refers to method of looking at the opponent. Instead of looking at specific part, it is better to look at the opponent like looking at a far mountain, sense the movement of the whole thing without disregarding the details}
7.背筋(せすじ)を伸ばす(のばす) [straighten your back] {refer to a person who have the tendency to crouch while kamae-ing thus impairing movement in attacking}
8.親指(おやゆび)に重心(じゅうしん)に置く(おく) [put your body weight on top of the toe or balls of the feet]
9.左(ひだり)こぶしは体(からだ)から離れすぎる(はなれすぎる) [left fist too far from the body] {refer to position of the left fist, it is taught usually the left fist must be 1.5 fist away from the body, but depends on sensei. Some say 1 fist away is enough some say it is better for 2 fist away especially in the case of female}
10.ひざが曲げすぎる(まげすぎる) [knee bent too much] @ 構え(かまえ)の高さ(たかさ)が低すぎる(ひくすぎる) [kamae too low] {Both most of the time refers to same thing when, the knee bent too much that the kamae height becomes to low that it impair movement and makes men and easier target. the knee must not bent to much neither be too straight}
okay that's all for today. Hope it is informative for you guys. Since it depend partly on sensei how they use their words to describe certain things, so some of the things written right here might not be the same with what your sensei use. And particularly all the things written right here are the advice i have received throughout my practice.
And one more thing, i have used a lot of time above the word sugiru 過ぎる(すぎる), it is when combine with an adjectives it creates a superlative condition for example fast 速い (はやい) to too fast 速すぎる(はやすぎる). That is all.
